It is easy to find out the version of iOS on your iPhone via the settings – as long as it is unlocked. You’ll find out how later in this post.
If your iPhone is locked then it is much harder because you can’t access the settings to look.
So does that mean you can’t find the version?
There is a way to tell which I can show you.
Is it iOS 6 and older, or iOS 7 and newer on your iPhone
Luckily, if you want to find out the version because you want to unlock it you only need to know if it is older, or newer than iOS 7.
This is because when iOS 7 came out the unlock instructions changed.
The unlock screen looks completely different on iOS 6 and earlier than it does on iOS 7 and newer. This makes it really easy to tell them apart.
You can see the pictures of how the 2 versions look in the pictures below:
If this is all you need to know then go back to the previous page to follow the passcode unlock instructions.
Need to know the exact version of iOS while it is unlocked?
You can’t really tell the exact version of iOS software you iPhone is running by looking at the icons on your iPhone.
You need to check properly to tell.
For example, on iOS 6 and earlier versions, all the icons look the same, as do iOS 7 and later versions.
This article will help you figure out exactly “what version iOS do I have?”.
How to check your iOS version
The pictures I have used below are from an older version of iOS. Your icons may look different. The steps are still the same even if your icons look different.
1. Press the Home button and choose Settings.
3. Tap ‘About’.
4. Scroll down to where it says ‘Version’ and it will say the exact version number of iOS you have installed on your iPhone.
The first number is all you are interested in. So in the example below iOS version 4 is installed.
5. That’s it! You now know which version iOS your iPhone is running so you can go back and complete the fix that is right for your iPhone.
